A typical class.
If you come along to a class you'll find a mixture of new and experienced yogis. However, experience doesn't mean that these people are doing massively difficult poses. It means that they have experience in listening to their body and breath and constantly learn from the feedback they get from their yoga. It means that they are observing their practice, growing their experience over time and learning about themselves. Sometimes the body reaches a limit, and if we accept whatever we can do in a given moment and go with that, we are practicing yoga.
Benefits of Yoga
When you come to a yoga class what might you expect to leave with? For me, it started with the physical benefits. Becoming more flexible, achieving different poses and releasing tight muscles. Over the last 10 years my practice has changed..and I have got older of course! I may not get to all the poses I'd like to, but when I get on to my yoga mat something changes in me. I feel a calm and a quietness take over, my breathing relaxes, my thoughts slow down, I feel connected to myself. An inner landscape appears and helps to confirm me, as a person. Yoga helps me find who I really am and helps me accept and like myself. Sometimes the poses themselves are secondary to everything else.
I hope that you will feel quieter, calmer, and more centered too. I could tell you about lowered heart rate and reduced stress, improved sleep and relaxation too, but I'll leave that for now. The experience of finding a different layer to yourself, one that is deeper and richer; one that makes you happy in your own skin...that's what it's about.
My daytime classes are a mixture of being passive and active. Waking up the system, stretching out and coming out of the mind in to the body. My evening class on Thursday at 8pm on Zoom is about preparing the body, breath and mind for deeper rest and sleep. Sometimes we do Yin yoga, sometimes a Yoga Nidra.
I like to try to suit the class to the students, so things do shift and change. No size fits all.
